Project Overview
Founded in 1926, Cincinnati Country Day School is a private, college preparatory school serving students from early childhood to grade 12 on a pastoral, 62-acre campus. At CCDS, athletics are an integral part of everyday life for its students. For 7th and 8th graders, it’s a school requirement that they have three-season participation on interscholastic teams. And while athletics aren’t a requirement for upper school students, 85% participate in either an individual or team sport. With such high athletic involvement, the school had a growing need for facilities that would support and elevate its programs. Thanks to majority funding from families and alumni, the Ohio-based private school underwent a 3.75 million dollar stadium renovation project in 2020. The stadium’s makeover included a new multi-sport synthetic turf field, home seating for more than 530 fans, a six-lane track, a digital scoreboard, LED lighting, a new sound system, and remodeled athletics entry. With such a large renovation, CCDS needed trusted, reliable partners to ensure every part of the project was strategically planned out, delivered in a timely manner, and done to the highest quality. The school chose The Motz Group — for its industry expertise and outstanding reputation — as one of its valued partners to install a new synthetic turf multipurpose field at the renovated stadium.
The Situation
After years of wear and tear, Cincinnati Country Day School’s stadium and athletic offerings became worn out and outdated. With poor surface conditions, non-optimal drainage, worn physical assets, and old support structures, it was time for the school to start exploring a stadium renovation. And a new synthetic turf field was an important part of the project. It just needed to find the right turf partner first. Dennis Coyle, the school’s Athletic Director and football coach, had heard about The Motz Group from other Cincinnati-area school officials and decided to pursue the company as a potential partner. Because of The Motz Group’s reputation as well-known, reliable industry experts, the company was selected to install a new multipurpose synthetic turf field in the new stadium.
The Play
The new, all-weather synthetic turf surface with upgraded lighting allows for more practice and game time play for all of the school’s athletic teams. But it is an especially big win for the school’s girl’s soccer team — a two time state championship winning team. The soccer teams previously played on Alamin Athletic Field — a natural grass field — at the front of campus which did not have permanent seating or lighting. The new synthetic turf field gives them a reliable surface to play on no matter the weather conditions and gives the teams the flexibility to play games later on into the evening — an important upgrade for players and fans. The school wanted a synthetic turf field that promoted player safety and would also be kind to the environment — two key values of CCDS. In its journey to achieve both, the school chose NXTPlay for the turf pad and NaturalPlay as the field’s infill. The infill is a top-of-the-line, innovative product as it is high performing, firm and fast, safe, sustainable, and comes with superior cooling technology. Families and alumni sponsoring the project were able to visit fields installed with NaturalPlay in the Cincinnati area to see the product for themselves. They all came to the same conclusion — it felt good underfoot and came with the performance capabilities necessary for the school.
