Roger Bacon High School Partners with The Motz Group to Rise Above Severe Flash Flood Damage

On the afternoon of Sunday, August 28th, nobody in the City of Cincinnati area could have anticipated what would soon drastically change the course of the days and weeks to follow. It was a Sunday, like many other Sundays in late summer, filled with trips to the pool, backyard BBQs, and children taking in the last drops of warmth before fall begins to strike. But that evening, unlike others, took a turn that significantly impacted pocketed parts of this mid-western community. To everyone’s surprise, a severe thunderstorm hit, bringing large amounts of rain, 4.4 inches in just a few short hours, resulting in extreme flash flooding. As a matter of fact, an official from the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati stated that the amount of rain received qualified for a 100-year storm, meaning there was a 1% chance a rainstorm of this nature would hit, and it did.

The flash floods were unexpected to say the least, but even more so damaging to the homes and businesses directly affected. One of the community assets impacted was Roger Bacon High School’s Bron Bacevich Stadium. The water fully submerged the stadium, compromised the synthetic turf field and left the school facing a difficult decision. Due to the age of the existing field and the severity of the damage, Roger Bacon decided to replace the synthetic turf surface with the ambitious goal of salvaging their fall sports season.

With the decision made and the tight schedule ahead, they reached out to the synthetic turf experts who had installed their previous synthetic turf surface, The Motz Group. Motz instantly sprung into action, working hand-in-hand with Roger Bacon to ensure the school would not only be given the opportunity to partake in their fall sports season, but receive an end-product that would further elevate their athletic program. Desiring high-performance durability and multi-sport versatility, Roger Bacon re-selected The Motz Group’s Twenty-Four/Seven Synthetic Turf System for their replacement.

Motz got right to work, cutting and removing the damaged turf, doing a full inspection of the base, relaying and infilling the new turf surface, which is now enhanced with an updated end-zone design. To ensure Roger Bacon’s goal of salvaging the fall sports season was achieved, additional Motz team members were onsite to expedite the installation. Their strategy paid off and the project wrapped in less than 21 days, two weeks less than a standard synthetic turf replacement.

“It was a pleasure to work with the team of professionals at The Motz Group. More importantly, it was great to partner with friends. They were there when we needed them – we will always remain appreciative of their dedication and can-do attitude. Our entire school community thanks Motz on a job well done,” shared Steven J. Schad, Principal of Roger Bacon High School.

The Motz Group takes pride in building fields and building futures by striving to make an impact on young athletes and the communities that they serve. Roger Bacon was placed in a difficult situation due to conditions out of their control, making this synthetic turf replacement project unique but appropriate for Motz to field. “Roger Bacon has been a dedicated customer and fellow community member to Motz for years. Though the circumstances were unfortunate, we are glad to have been able to help the school during their time of need. Our team hopes that the new Twenty-Four/Seven Synthetic Turf Field will provide their Spartans a winning platform for many seasons to come,” said Zachary D. Burns, President of The Motz Group.
