Fruit Street Athletic Fields at Hopkinton Parks & Recreation

Project Overview

The Fruit Street Athletic Fields were built in 2010 for the town of Hopkinton. By 2021, it was time to replace the two multi-purpose synthetic turf soccer fields. The safety, longevity, environmental sustainability, and performance of these two sports fields were important in the decision process. Hopkinton Parks & Recreation decided to use updated materials and modern infill technology for this construction project. 

Gale Associates, a firm of Weymouth, managed the project from a design and consulting engineering perspective. Atlantic Sports Group was the installer of the Fruit Street Athletic Fields turf replacement project for Hopkinton Parks & Recreation.

The Situation

It was time to replace the two soccer fields at Fruit Street Athletic Fields. Hopkinton was looking for an environmentally friendly infill option instead of crumb rubber for both of their turf surfaces, as well as a way to improve the safety and performance of the 11-year-old Fruit Street Athletic Fields. Envirofill was the sustainable and reusable infill Hopkinton Park & Recreation chose as the replacement for crumb rubber. The modern infill used in this turf reconstruction project is a green-coated sand with Microban technology. The construction process using Envirofill was smooth and Atlantic Sports Group had no issue installing the turf infill.

The Play

They chose to replace the crumb rubber infill with Envirofill, a more environmentally friendly and reusable infill with Microban technology to protect the turf system from mold, virus, and mildew. Envirofill is a sustainable option yielding safer and better-performing surfaces.

The Atlantic Sports Group replaced the shock pad, the existing synthetic turf with a new dual fiber blend, and crumb rubber infill with Envrofill to create two updated soccer fields for Hopkinton. They added the lines to the turf surface to accommodate other sports for both men and women athletes, such as lacrosse, football, and field hockey.

The Win

Sustainability and Environmental Impact
The Fruit Street Athletic Fields are near conservation land. Hopkinton considered environmental and sustainable products and materials when planning the replacement of these two soccer fields to be conscious of the impact these fields had on land. Protecting the global ecosystem by removing crumb rubber infill and replacing it with Envirofill provided a renewable infill alternative.
